The advantage of using one of these latches is that one can open the gate from either side of the gate. Latch has a provision for a padlock on the inside. Gate will be unlockable from the outside if padlocked. Latches are self-closing and easy to install for the do-it-yourselfer. A drill, ratchet, and a wood rasp is all that is required to install.
