Drop rod shown here installed on 2 wooden gates with the Adjust-A-GateDrop rods are referred to as drop pins, cane bolts and drop rod bolts.  Drop rods are used on double swing gates.  Drop rods can be installed on one of the gate or on both leaves of the double gate.

Typically a piece of tubing, pvc pipe or other material is driven into the ground.  The drop rod can be slid into the pipe to hold the gate in the open or closed position.

If you plan to install the drop rod into a concrete or asphalt surface, simply drill a hole large enough to accommodate the drop or cane bolt.  Keep in mind that if it's possible to drill completely through the concrete that is best to avoid freezing when the hole fills up with snow, ice or water during the cold months.

Drop rods are usually categorized by the length of the drop rod bolt.  Taller gates will require a taller drop rod to fully secure the gate in the closed or open positions.
