Electric strikes are used with entry devices such as push buttons, card readers, keypads, and such to open a locked door. The strikes are powered by an external source, usually a transformer. Most electric strikes are "fail secure" meaning they stay locked without power and open when the power activates the strike. AC powered strikes make a buzzing sound when activated to signal a person to push the door open. DC powered strikes don't make this buzzing sound, usually makes a slight click sound when activated. If a buzzing sound is needed with a DC powered strike, a buzzer can be added between the power supply and the strike.
